Selected in 2018 by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for the Inter-University Exchange Project that supports the forming of collaborative programs be- tween Japanese and North American universities, Tokyo Geidai Graduate School of Film and New Media and the Interactive Media & Games Division of the University of Southern Cali- fornia School of Cinematic Arts, known as the best game design school in the U.S., jointly explore methods to improve games ed- ucation for both faculty and students by conducting innovative international programs. The 2020 academic year of Tokyo Geidai welcomed online workshops on game development by USC professors An- dreas Kratky and Peter Brinson. The schools then launched the second round of the Tokyo Geidai × USC Collaboration Project with an online kickoff meeting in January 2021. Setting their sights on the Vertical Slice presentation in GEIDAI GAMES 02 and beta in the USC GAMES EXPO 2021, students hold fre- quent online discussions with their teammates while checking in regularly with the faculty on their progress.

2020-21 Tokyo Geidai and USC Collaboration

Forced by the coronavirus pandemic, the latest iteration of the Geidai and USC Game Design collaboration had to take place online. This was both a somewhat sad and exciting experience. It was sad, because the greatest pleasure of this collaboration is to work closely with the exceptional students at Geidai in the workshops and guide them through the steps of the game design process. Online meetings are just not a perfect substitute for the personal experience of these workshops. At the same time, it also was an exciting experience - the simple fact that we were able to continue our partnership despite the challenges we are all facing these days, shows how robust this collaboration is. The students were as committed as always and the concepts, projects and results of the workshop were great. I am looking forward to the joint game projects made by the groups of Geidai and USC students - and, as always, it is a tremendous pleasure to be part of this outstanding collaboration.

2020 Workshop with Tokyo Geidai Students

Teaching the Geidai students online this year reminded me of the power of the moving image. Although working remotely makes our collaboration tricky, I am always able to ground my teaching approaches around the Geidai students’ work itself; the Geidai students never fail to gracefully shape exquisite imagery and enigmatic animations into the striking themes and magical metaphors that they then thread throughout their digital game experiences.
