The Tokyo Geidai x USC Collaboration Projec launched in November 2019 when the Geidai students visited their USC teammates in Los Angeles. After the success of several years of Animation to Games projects, we are now seeing the first results of yet another bold, innovative endeavor. The works exhibited in this show are the in-progress results of an international collaboration between students from Tokyo Geidai and the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles. The idea of bringing together students from Japan and the U.S. is not only a wonderful contribution to foster international, cross-cultural understanding, it is also an extremely powerful setting to begin new creative paths, develop new experience possibilities, and to move Game Design into a new and unique direction. Combining the creative power, the methods, and the tremendous industry experience of these two countries in a new and ambitious academic endeavor is extremely exciting and visionary. After seeing the Alpha-Versions of the game projects in this show, we can begin to imagine what the final versions might be and where we could go from there. I continue to be impressed and humbled by the forward-thinking and endeavoring spirit of the students and faculty, and in particular of Professor Okamoto and Professor Kiriyama.

Teaching games is entirely straightforward because the best games are learning systems, and successful classrooms are first and foremost playful. When a game works, the player is like an engaged student; the player asks questions about the possibilities, makes conceptual connections, and synthesizes the system before pursuing outcomes. Therefore, the game design classroom is a natural playground, and by extension, a model for game design itself.

The expressive, rich and inviting worlds shown in these projects embody not just the students' abilities and imagination but the unique energy found at the boundary of two creative communities. Their success illustrates the unexplored possibilities in the future of both animation and games.

Games offer a unique language that allows a designer and a player to collaboratively shape the art experience; it is an art form that is inherently participatory. The collaboration between Geidai and USC is exciting because it brings together creators from either side of the world to shape a language shared across cultures.
